Colortech Color Concentrates
Colortech - our name says it all. Our strength is color and we are committed to
providing you with the best color concentrate technology in the marketplace
today. From subtle off-whites and earth tones to vibrant reds, brilliant blues
and vivid yellows, Colortech offers a broad spectrum of cost-effective color
concentrates to meet all of your processing needs. In addition to our standard
general purpose colorants, selected products have been formulated to satisfy
the most demanding high performance applications. including critical blown film,
cast film, high speed injection molding, extrusion coating and fibers.
Can’t find the exact color and performance characteristics you’re looking for?
Colortech also offers an extensive color matching and formulation service,
allowing us to quickly and easily blend custom colors and additive packages to
suit your specific application needs. Give us a call and let us show you how
Colortech brings color to life.
Carrier Resin Options
Although LLDPE is the carrier of choice for most routine polyolefin extrusion
operations, it may not provide the best performance in all processing
situations. As an alternative, Colortech can supply custom formulated carrier
resins that provide optimum rheological and physical performance in specific
applications.
Optional carriers include HDPE, LDPE and LDPE/LLDPE resin blends for film and
blow molding. High melt index LLDPE is often preferred for high speed injection
molding. In addition, EVA copolymer carriers can be specified for use in
polystyrene, HIPS, ABS and PVC applications while EMA carriers are best suited
for polypropylene, polyamide, polycarbonate, ionomer, acrylic and acetal resin
systems. Your Colortech Sales Representative will be happy to help you select a
concentrate/carrier resin combination that's specifically suited to your
individual processing needs.
Lightfastness, Thermal Stability and Opacity
Lightfastness is a term used to describe the fade resistance of colorant
formulations. It is an inherent characteristic of the pigment system used and
is not significantly affected by the presence of UV light stabilizers which may
be incorporated in the formulation to protect the polymer substrate. When
discussing lightfastness values, remember they are estimates based on the
standard Blue Scale (1-8) rating system where 8 represents the highest fade
resistance. Since concentrate lightfastness levels can be affected by letdown
and UV exposure conditions, these values should be used strictly as a guideline
for product selection.
High lightfastness values are important in many durable goods applications
where outdoor life expectancies are often measured in years. Many high
durability products such as safety fencing, fiber optic cable conduit and
industrial containers can benefit from the excellent lightfastness and
brilliant color strength of heavy metal-based colorants. Lightfastness is
generally not a concern in disposable consumer packaging where organic heavy
metal-free pigment systems are the concentrates of choice.
Some of Colortech's standard colorant formulations are not suitable for
extended high temperature use, therefore any recommended processing
temperatures are intended as a guideline only. Since residence times, letdowns
and process shear rates can differ significantly from application to
application, actual thermal stability results may vary.
In many applications, opacity or hiding power is a critical factor in
concentrate selection. In general, heavy metal-free (HMF) organic pigments do
not provide the same hiding power, color strength and dispersion quality as
inorganic heavy metal-based (HM) colorants. Organic and inorganic HMF versions
of all heavy metal-based products shown can be supplied but in many cases
significant differences in color, opacity and lightfastness will be noted.
Regulatory Status
Colortech concentrates designated as HMF are considered to be heavy metal-free
under CONEG model toxics legislation (lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent
chromium totals less than 100 parts per million) at all usage levels.
Formulations listed as FDA comply with United States Food and Drug
Administration guidelines for use in food packaging applications. Heavy metal-
based colorants are designated as HM and are primarily recommended for use in
durable goods applications.
Colortech is a North American based manufacturer of color and additive
concentrates for the plastics industry. Our products are used in a wide range
of products, from everyday household consumer items such as food packaging,
toys, diapers, and grocery bags to industrial materials used in
telecommunications, such as conduit, wire and cable coatings, fiber-based non-
woven products and twine. Colortech concentrates & compounds are used in
agriculture applications, such as mulch film, greenhouse & nursery films and
pipe as well as in environmental systems such as geomembrane sheet.
While we carry a range of standard white, black, color & additive concentrates
for typical applications, our expertise in custom color matching and
specialized additive formulation for any plastics challenge awaits your inquiry.
