Colortech Black Concentrates
Colortech is color - a spectrum of concentrate products from subtle off-whites
and rich earth tones to vibrant reds, brilliant blues and more. But Colortech
is also your source for high quality black concentrates. Colortech 20000 Series
Blacks have been carefully formulated and manufactured to provide you with the
ultimate in product consistency, processability and cost effective performance.
Colortech also offers a custom formulation service that can tailor a specific
concentrate package to your precise requirements.
Selecting the Right Black Concentrate
Today, carbon black is the most common pigment used in the manufacture of black
concentrates for polymer processing. The proper carbon black grade can
contribute high color and opacity, excellent ultra-violet light protection and
even electrical conductivity to finished articles. Selecting the best carbon
black concentrate for your specific polyolefin application requires careful
consideration of pigment particle size, surface area and physical structure.
Small particle size blacks such as the 17 nanometer N110 type often possess
high surface areas and therefore exhibit greater degrees of jetness (or '
blackness') than larger particle size blacks. Small particle size blacks are
highly effective UV light absorbers but they are difficult to disperse at high
loadings and often result in high viscosity concentrate. Large particle blacks
such as N762 tend to exhibit poorer tint strength, but their low cost and
excellent dispersability make them ideal candidates for most routine colorant
work.
Another key property of carbon blacks is the three dimensional clustering of
particle aggregates often refered to as 'structure'. Within a given particle
size range, increases in structure result in higher melt viscosities, slightly
lower gloss and tint strength and slightly improved dispersability. Electrical
conductivity develops when extremely high structure, small particle blacks are
incorporated in a polyolefin matrix in such a way that electron transfer can
readily occur between neighboring particle aggregates.
This brochure uses standard ASTM designations to describe carbon blacks in
terms of their particle size, surface area and structure characteristics. In
general terms, the effect of carbon black selection on concentrate and end-
product properties are shown below.

When the performance criterion is cost-effective color, Colortech 20005-19
General Purpose Black and Colortech Filled Black are outstanding performers.
Superior processability coupled with a desirable blue undertone make these
grades ideally suited for most non-durable blown film, sheet and molding
applications.
For extended UV weatherability, N110 blacks are the preferred choice. Colortech
20411-18 UV Black provides a basic level of ultra-violet protection when used
at 5-8% addition levels. Colortech 20413-19 and 20435-19 UV Blacks are
formulated with a supplementary stabilization package for improved performance
at high processing temperatures typically encountered in extrusion coating and
heavy gauge pipe extrusion. Finally, Colortech 20306-19 UV Black contains a
hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) and process stabilizer package that
makes it suitable for use in thin gauge agricultural films requiring maximum
levels of ultra-violet light protection.
Conductive blacks such as Colortech 20011-19 are useful in providing a
permanent reduction of electrostatic discharge hazards in sheet, film and
injection molded articles for the storage and handling of electronic components.
Optimum conductivity is achieved using 20011-19 directly as a molding compound.
Applications such as extruded polypropylene sheet for thermoformed microwave
food trays require the incorporation of a colorant suitable for direct food
contact. High quality packaging applications are best served by products such
as 20502-19 High Performance FDA Black. Colortech 20502-51 is an EVA-based
version of this product designed for use in polystyrene, HIPS and selected
engineering resins. Finally, Colortech 20501-18 Iron Oxide Black provides a
viable FDA alternative when the use of carbon black is not permitted or
desirable.
Carrier Resin Options
While LLDPE is the carrier resin of choice for most polyolefin extrusion
operations, alternate carriers include HDPE, LDPE and LDPE/LLDPE resin blends
which provide optimum rheological performance in specific applications. In
addition, custom EVA copolymer carriers can be specified for use in
polystyrene, HIPS, ABS and PVC applications while EMA carriers are best suited
for polypropylene, polyamide, polycarbonate, ionomer, acrylic and acetal resin
systems. Your Colortech Sales Representative will be happy to help you select
a concentrate carrier resin that's right for your processing situation.
Regulatory Status
Colortech concentrates designated as HMF are considered to be heavy metal-free
under CONEG model toxics legislation (lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent
chromium totals less than 100 parts per million). Formulations listed as FDA
comply with United States Food and Drug Administration guidelines for use in
food packaging applications.
Colortech is a North American based manufacturer of color and additive
concentrates for the plastics industry. Our products are used in a wide range
of products, from everyday household consumer items such as food packaging,
toys, diapers, and grocery bags to industrial materials used in
telecommunications, such as conduit, wire and cable coatings, fiber-based non-
woven products and twine. Colortech concentrates & compounds are used in
agriculture applications, such as mulch film, greenhouse & nursery films and
pipe as well as in environmental systems such as geomembrane sheet.
While we carry a range of standard white, black, color & additive concentrates
for typical applications, our expertise in custom color matching and
specialized additive formulation for any plastics challenge awaits your inquiry.
